An archive editorial reading
Martin Margiela reduced volume to an optical proposition. Photographs of garments were printed onto fluid or transparent fabrics, allowing the image of an existing piece to supply the apparent shape of a simple dress. Seams and surface were no longer reliable evidence of what a garment was made from.
The photographs came from Anders Edström, Marina Faust, Ronald Stoops and Tatsuya Kitayama. Footwear followed the same process of reduction: the Tabi became black leather soles held to the feet with transparent tape. The collection’s specificity lies in this continuous shift between a material object and its representation, making lightness and illusion part of construction itself.
