An archive editorial reading
No. 13 brought the Arts and Crafts movement into McQueen’s investigation of the dressed body. Wood, leather, lace and raffia placed contrasting forms of making alongside one another, from soft layered skirts to firm, high-necked bodices.
Carved ash prosthetic legs made craftsmanship part of the figure itself. This material vocabulary reveals a sustained enquiry into support, protection and ornament. The V&A later presented pieces from the collection in Fashion in Motion, with different staging from the original runway.
For the original finale, Shalom Harlow stood on a rotating platform while two industrial robots sprayed her white muslin dress with black and yellow paint. The garment acquired its final surface in front of the audience, connecting a handmade wardrobe with a mechanical act of transformation.
