Body Meets Dress, Dress Meets Body

Rei Kawakubo brought stretch gingham into direct contact with asymmetric volumes padded with down. Bulges appeared at the torso, back and hips, making the boundary between a body and the garment surrounding it difficult to locate. Familiar checks made those unfamiliar contours particularly clear.
The collection changed the silhouette through construction rather than relying on a conventional division between flattering dress and the figure beneath. Its relationship to motion continued in Scenario, the 1997 collaboration with Merce Cunningham. Dance revealed how padding could redirect an outline and resist an expected gesture. The collection therefore asks to be seen from several angles and in movement, with the garment treated as an active form.
